Secure Print: section overview

Secure Print holds print jobs in the cloud until a user authenticates at a printer. Print jobs never sit uncollected in a tray. This section contains everything an administrator needs to configure, manage, and extend Secure Print: setup guides, device configuration, feature how-tos, and end-user workflows.

How Secure Print works

A user prints from a workstation, mobile device, or the web portal. The job is encrypted and held in the cloud rather than sent straight to a printer. When the user walks up to any enrolled device and authenticates — by card, mobile app, QR sign-in, passcode, or username — HP Secure Print identifies their held jobs and sends the release instruction to the printer. The job prints only at that moment, with the user present.

For a detailed walkthrough of each stage, see How Secure Print printing works.

Release methods

A single printer can support more than one release method. The methods available depend on the printer model and how Device Profiles are configured.

Method How the user releases Guide
QR Release Scan a QR label on the printer with the HP Secure Print mobile app QR Release user guide
Printer Sign-In Authenticate at the printer panel using card, PIN, passcode, or username and password Configure Printer Sign-In
QR Sign-In (HP only) Scan a QR code shown on the device screen with the mobile app — no keyboard entry needed Configure QR Sign-In
Touchless Printing Jobs release automatically when the user's proximity card is detected near the printer Touchless settings in Device Profiles
